MOT SymbolThe MOT

An MOT test certificate confirms that at the time of test, the vehicle has met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards. It does not mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate. The test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Maintenance that is necessary for the reliable and efficient operation of the vehicle but not its safety forms part of a service inspection that is recommended by manufacturers, but is not a legal requirement for operating the vehicle on the public highway.

What's tested on an MOT?

The MOT test covers the following aspects:

  • Lighting and signalling equipment
  • Steering (including suspension)
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and wheels
  • Seat belts
  • Body, structure and general items
  • Exhaust, fuel and emissions
  • Drivers view of the road

When do I need an MOT?

In general you must get an MOT test every year once your vehicle is 3 years old (This may vary for your vehicle type) You can then renew your MOT up to a month before it expires. The earliest date you can get your vehicle tested is printed on the pass certificate.

You need to use an approved MOT test centre to get your MOT. Only centres showing the blue sign with 3 white triangles can carry out your MOT. The Harris Motor Co is an approved class 4 MOT test centre and can MOT passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles.

Approved centres must show an official MOT Test: Fees and Appeals poster on a public notice board on their premises. This must list contact details for your local VOSA area office.

If your vehicle fails an MOT test then providing you leave the vehicle with us for repair (within 10 working days) there will be no fee for a retest.

MOT History

The Ministry of Transport test (usually abbreviated to MOT test) is an annual test of automobile safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required for most vehicles over three years old used on public roads in the United Kingdom.

The MOT test certificates are currently issued in Great Britain under the auspices of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), an agency within the Department for Transport.

The test and the pass certificate are often referred to simply as the MOT.
